A Pathway to Spiritual Maturity and Rest (Ep.4) - Finding Rest in the Overflow: Navigating Seasons of Plenty

Kenneth Davis Season 5 Episode 7

Send us a text

What happens when the struggle isn't scarcity, but abundance? This thoughtful exploration challenges prosperity gospel misconceptions while offering a biblical framework for stewarding seasons of blessing.

The spiritual pitfalls of abundance often prove more dangerous than the challenges of lack. While many believers understand seeking God in hardship, fewer navigate prosperity with the same spiritual attentiveness. This episode examines the subtle deception that can accompany financial blessing and reframes abundance through a biblical lens.

Drawing from 2 Corinthians 9:8-11, we discover God's true intention behind blessing us with "complete sufficiency" – not to fuel our own desires but to create "an abundance for every good work." This shifts our perspective from self-centered consumption to becoming conduits of God's generosity toward others, especially those experiencing poverty.

The spiritual dynamics of giving reveal something remarkable: generosity creates a powerful cycle where recipients often become generous givers themselves. As one listener commented, "This completely changed how I view my recent promotion and pay increase." Rather than seeing abundance as a reward for faithfulness, we learn to ask, "Lord, what do you want me to do with this?"

A particularly poignant segment addresses church leaders who manipulate believers through guilt-based appeals for giving. God never compels giving through manipulation – "for God loves a cheerful giver." True biblical generosity flows from heart connection with God, not external pressure or obligation.

Whether you're currently experiencing abundance or praying for provision, this episode offers practical wisdom for distinguishing between needs and wants while developing the spiritual maturity to steward God's resources faithfully. What might change in your life if you viewed everything – your income, possessions, and opportunities – as belonging to God rather than yourself?

Tranquility Base. Here the Eagle has landed. Welcome to another look podcast. This is the day the Lord has made. We shall rejoice and be glad in it. This is a great day. This is Brother Kenny D, your brother in the Lord, man who is after God's own heart, even though sometimes I slip, just like you do. But you know what God still loves me and I'm glad about it.

Speaker 2:

So you know we had a lot of feedback on this series that we're in in taking rest in the grace of God In lean times, taking rest in the grace of God when we have physical challenges, just learning how to take rest in God during challenging times. And in this episode we're going to talk about something a little unique. We're still going to talk about the rest of God in the grace of God, but we're going to talk about it in the area of abundance. So in this episode we will talk about how we are to submit to God's grace and find rest in Him in seasons of abundance. And I know for some of you this may seem like a foreign concept, because you know, if you walk in the faith humbly before God, even though you may have gone through more seasons of lack, trust me, you will experience the blessing of El Shaddai, the God of more than enough. However, we have to address a few heart issues many of us have or had or will have as it relates to abundance. So let's correct some misconceptions. Okay, because when we talk about abundance, I think a lot of mindsets go to a place they should not go, because, number one, it's not Bible, it's not in the word of God for those of us who follow after Christ, but also because we have been taught some things that were incorrect. So let's start with the first hard issue. First issue is abundance is not about your wants. God gives us abundance to address our needs as well as the needs of others, and that's the concept you have to get in your mindset right away. It's not about just your needs. Yes, he will provide for your needs, but he also takes care of the needs of others, and but he uses you to do that. And here's my authority.

Speaker 2:

Second Corinthians nine, verses eight, nine and 11 speak on this in detail. Now I'm going to read this in the Amplified Bible. Again, it's Second Corinthians 9, verses 6. I'll read 6 through 11, but with focus on verses 8, 9, and 11. So the reading is as thus Now remember this he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows generously that blessings may come to others, will also reap generously and be blessed. Let each one give thoughtfully and with purpose, just as he has decided in his heart, not grudgingly. I'm sorry, let me read that verse again, verse seven Let each one give thoughtfully and with purpose, just as he has decided in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion. Listen up, pastors. Not under compulsion, not grudgingly, for God loves a cheerful giver and delights in the one whose heart is in his gift.

Speaker 2:

Verse 8. And God is able to make all grace, every favor and earthly blessing come in abundance to you so that you may always, under all circumstances, regardless of the need, have complete sufficiency in everything, being completely self-sufficient in him and having an abundance for every good work and act of charity. As it is written and forever remains written he, the benevolent and generous person, scattered, scattered abroad, he gave to the poor. His righteousness endures forever. Verse 10. Now, he who provides seed for the sower and bread for food will provide and multiply your seed for sowing, that is, your resources, and increases the harvest of your righteousness, which shows itself an act of goodness, kindness and love you will forever. I mean you will be enriched in every way so that you may be generous. And this generosity administered through us is producing thanksgiving to God from those who benefit. So let's break that down. I think it speaks for itself. Amen, but let's break it down.

Speaker 2:

So in verse 8, god tells us he causes his grace to come to us in abundance for a few reasons. First, to ensure we are completely sufficient to tend to all our needs, and again the key word is needs, not our greeds. Also, number two, the abundance is for us to give towards every good work and act of charity he calls us to give to. In verse nine, he tells us the most urgent good work and charity in which to sow our abundance towards. And guess who? That is? Those who are poor, those who are impoverished.

Speaker 2:

So now take a look at verse 10. God's telling us, if we sow seed he has provided he will multiply that seed to add more to your personal resources and increase what you harvest or reap. Excuse me, I had a little burp, so let me read that again increase what you harvest or reap. Excuse me, I had a little burp, so let me read that again. In verse 10, it says this now he who provides seed for the sower and bread for food will provide and multiply your seed for sowing, that is, your resources, and increase the harvest of your righteousness, which shows itself in act of goodness, kindness and love. So, again in this verse, he's telling us that if we sow seed he has provided, he will multiply that seed to add more to your personal resources, and that's to take care of your needs, but also increase what you harvest or reap. In verse 11, he tells us what he expects us to do with the seed he multiplied and increased in verse 10. And what is that expectation? He wants us to show generosity and steward the resources and increased harvest to others, and those who are the beneficiaries of your giving will give God thanks for your generosity. See, this is where the concept of paying forward is demonstrated, because those who benefit from your generosity often are the same people who become the greatest givers themselves, beloved.

Speaker 2:

The bottom line is this Giving is reciprocal. If you give, those who you give towards will be the even greater givers than yourself, because giving is infectious. Giving is the, the hand of god moving through the, the lives of people. To give, he will cause, he will compel people, he will convict people, he will uh encourage people, he will uh influence people to give because of your giving. And the thing is, it's not based on you. He puts an anointing on what you give so that it will cause others, who are recipients of it, to have that same anointing that in themselves. Even though they don't understand it, they want to give because there's a spirit attached to it. That's God, who is a compassionate God, who encourages and influences others through your giving to give because his hand is on it.

Speaker 2:

Here's another hard issue. Next, we have to redefine the term abundance. We have misdefined abundance the same as we have misdefined El Shaddai. In our minds we've assumed, since God is the God of more than enough, in other words, his name is Jehovah El Shaddai, or El Shaddai, the God of more than enough, or God, the many-breasted one. In our minds, we've assumed, since God is the God of more than enough, he will give us more than what we are needing. Let me repeat that again We've assumed, since God is the God of more than enough, he will give us more than what we are needing. Is the God of more than enough, he will give us more than what we are needing. And Satan has taken us erroneous thinking and caused the body of Christ to believe, like the movie Wall Street, that greed is good. Now let's put that jaded mindset up to the words that we see in James 4, 1 through 10.

Speaker 2:

And again I'm reading this in Amplified it says what leads to the unending quarrels and conflicts among you, do they not come from your hedonistic desires that wage war in your, it says, envious, and cannot obtain the object of your envy? So you fight and battle you do not have, because you do not ask it of God. You ask God for something and do not receive it. Because you ask with wrong motives, out of selfishness or with unrighteous agenda, so that when you get what you want you may spend it on your hedonistic desires. You adulteresses, disloyal sinners flirting with the world and breaking your vow to God. Do you not know that being the world's friend, that is, loving the things of the world, is being God's enemy? So whoever chooses to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God?

Speaker 2:

Or do you think that the scripture says to no purpose that the human spirit which he has made to dwell in us lust with envy, but he who gives us more and more grace there. It is through the power of the Holy Spirit to defy sin and live an obedient life. That reflects both our faith and our gratitude for our salvation. Therefore it says God is opposed to the proud and haughty, but continually gives the gift of grace to the humble who turn away from self-righteousness. So submit to the authority of God, resist the devil, stand firm against him and he will flee from you. Come close to God with a contrite heart and he will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your unfaithful hearts.

Speaker 2:

You double-minded people, be miserable and grieve and weep over your sin. Let your foolish laughter be turned to mourning and your reckless joy to gloom. Humble yourselves with an attitude of repentance and insignificance in the presence of the Lord, and he will exalt you, he will lift you up, he will give you purpose. There's a lot there, but let me break it down for you, not break it down for you. Let me simplify it for you. The bottom line is this Our external drama comes from the internal fights waging war from our carnality. Again, our external drama comes from the internal fights which wage war from our carnality. We are jealous and covet to have what others have, and because we can't get it, we murder them with our mouths. Sometimes we don't have what we seek because we never asked God.

Speaker 2:

That's in verse two or or beloved if we do ask God we don't get what we ask for because our ungodly motives to consume it on our fleshly desires and our unrighteous agendas. God's not stupid. He knows why you want it and he's not going to give it to you if it's not going to give him glory and he's not going to give it to you if it's going to be consumed because you want to lust. Some of y'all want a spouse. I want a husband, I want a wife. But you don't want it for the right reasons. You want it so you can have sex on a daily and get your groove on, but you don't really love them, you lust them, and God's not going to give you his daughter or his son for you to consume your lust on, because you haven't had any for a few weeks, months, years. I mean it's not because of that, because I mean, let's be honest, when God's looking at giving your spouse, it's so that you too can multiply, you too can be one in him, so that you too can be giving you a spouse. It's so that you two can multiply, you two can be one in him, so that you two can be tied to him, because it's a three-fold cord to be married. I mean, come on, let's not be ignorant. God's not stupid. Did you forget what he says in Hebrews 4, 12, that the word of God is alive and active. It exposes and judges the thoughts and intentions of your heart. So look, you have a choice remain or repent of? God is alive and active. It exposes and judges the thoughts and intentions of your heart. So look, you have a choice Remain or repent. Repent or remain. To repent means to turn away from your unrighteous desires and intentions. It's a full 180 degree turn, without the look back, because sometimes looking back beloved can be the end of you in the life. Ask Lot Look at his wife. She looked back. That was it. Or you could choose to remain in your current state of rebellion and disobedience. After all, god has given all of us the freedom of choice. You control your choice, it's all on you. But, however, god has not given you the freedom of consequences. You have no control over the consequences resulting from your choices. I saw this quote yesterday that sums it up and it says it best the consequences of your life today are based on the thoughts you chose to nurture yesterday. The consequences of your life today are based on the thoughts you chose to nurture yesterday. So choose wisely.

Speaker 2:

My friends, I leave you this scripture, and I hope you think on this. As in Deuteronomy 30, 15 through 20, and many of you know this. I'm reading this in Amplified. It says listen closely. I've set before you today life and prosperity, in other words, good, and I've also set before you death and adversity.

Speaker 2:

Evil In that I command you today to love the Lord, your God, to walk, that is, to live each and every day in his ways and to keep his commandments and his statutes and his judgments or precepts, so that you may live and multiply and that the Lord, your God, will bless you in the land which you are entering to possess. But if your heart turns away and you will not hear and obey but are drawn away and worship other gods and serve them, I declare to you today that you will certainly perish. You will not live long in the land which you crossed the Jordan to enter and possess. I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you today that I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. Therefore, you should choose life in order that you may live, you and your descendants, by loving the Lord, your God, by obeying his voice and by holding closely to him, for he is your life, your good life, your abundant life, your fulfillment and the length of your days, that you may live in the land which the Lord promised or swore to give to your fathers, to Abraham, isaac and Jacob. Listen, you're a blessed person. God has given you an abundance and you now.

Speaker 2:

The next question, when you see this abundance or when you acknowledge that you have this abundance in front of you, is to ask God what do I do with this? The same way, solomon, when he was given the kingdom, when God said, what would you have me to do? And Solomon didn't. He didn't ask for wealth. He said I need wisdom. Lord, you put me in front of all these great amount of people and a great blessed people. I need to know. Have your godly wisdom on how to rule and how to be a king to them. Take the same approach with your abundance. You now have a job that provides resources to you. Lord. What do I do with this? After I pay the bills that I have for my needs, what do you want me to do with the remainder? What do you want me to sow? What do you want me to do with the remainder? What do you want me to sow? What do you want me to give?

Speaker 2:

Ask God for wisdom, because the reality is anything you have. You're a steward of, even the money you make. It's not your money, it's his money. Ask him what to do with his money. That way, when he sees you being faithful in what he's told you to do with it, he will increase you. He will increase what he provides to you. He will increase to give you more, because he knows he could trust you to do with it what he needs to be done in the earth with it. And this is what allows us to take rest in that area.

Speaker 2:

A lot of us don't get a lot of us, and I'll be honest with you, I'm the same way sometimes, and not as much. But I was one time when God gave me abundance. I was not comfortable, because I'm so used to being in lack and leanness and struggling financially or in other areas. And so when the abundance came and it wasn't a suddenly, it was a gradual thing I sat there and I looked at it. I said thank you, lord. No, I didn't do this initially, but after a few seasons I said, lord, thank you. What do you want me to do with this, you know, and there were some liberations he gave me from some teachings that were not actually false, but they were not necessarily true either, and I won't get into that right now. But what he started doing was show me, I want you to sow here, I want you to sow there, I want you to do this, I want you to sow and some things. It was like I want you to sow into your kids or I want you to sow into your wife.

Speaker 2:

We forget about those things. We think about those things, we think about so-and-so and we think about things outside of our house. But what about the people in your house? What about those who may not be in your house but outside your house? May be in your family though, but again, this has to be as God leads, not as they tell you God's saying to do.

Speaker 2:

Don't be manipulated spiritually either by people. Don't be manipulated spiritually either by people. That's why I made that note when I was in 2 Corinthians about out of compulsion. God will never compel you or coerce you to giving when you see that that's not God. See, god loves a cheerful giver. That's why I said when God blessed you with abundance there's a spirit attached to the increase where it will cause you. It will draw you out to want to give more Because, as you saw, he's giving seed to the sower. There's a spirit of giving attached to that seed that you see, when other people get blessed, you want to give more. So it's not out of compulsion, it's because you're cheerful in it. But when people want you to feel guilty or condemn you for not giving, that's not.

Speaker 2:

God. That's them, because they want to be able to get a new suit or get out the debt that they got into that God never told them to get into. I hate to say it, but it happens a lot I've seen it personally where there was a particular person who was leading a church who wanted to have a certain addition to their church. And they compelled people, they composed people, they guilted people into giving. And one of the things they used was oh, we're going to use this to when we open this part of the building, we're going to have people come in who are homeless. We're going to shelter the homeless, we're going to do all these things in the community. And they did none of that. Come in who are homeless, we're going to shelter the homeless, we're going to do all these things in the community. They did none of that. They just wanted to have this peace, because other churches in their association had the same thing. You know, we want to do this. Whatever thing, maybe the outdoor theater or something like that. It's always something, but it's under false pretenses.

Speaker 2:

And when they tell you to give, if God tells you to give and you feel you're for it, you're in agreement. Give, but don't feel compelled. You got to check your spirit. When people do this, because there's so much of this guilting into giving, and that's not God, that's not God at all. I rebuke that spirit and that's not God, that's not God at all. I rebuke that spirit and if you have a problem with me saying it, leaders or pastors, you take it to God and see if I'm incorrect, because the reality is and I'm going into a tangent here, but it's still related.

Speaker 2:

The reality is just as the parishioners or the pew sitters have to have faith for God, for the things they have need of, so must the leaders. Because the reality is and I've said this before, the church is the bride of Christ and Christ will always take care of his bride. But the problem is when leaders, pastors, whoever it may be, who leads the church, when they get in bed with the bride and try to provide for the bride, they're having an affair. They're cheating on their own spouses, they're cheating and they're having an affair with the bride of Christ. That's not their responsibility. Your responsibility as a leader is to feed the sheep. If there's a need for the church, the groom will take care of the bride.

Speaker 2:

You, leader, do the same thing you ask the people in the pews to do have faith, trust in God for whatever the need is, and God will take care of it. So that means, yeah, you're going to have to go through seasons where you may struggle because you don't have, but you work with what you have until God provides. And if God doesn't provide, that means he doesn't want it in his house. Have the same faith that you're asking the people you feed to have. It doesn't really take faith when you force people to give because you guilted them into it. It's almost like spiritual manipulation. And, trust me, god's a God of an abundance. He has more than enough for you, and I know it's not easy as a leader when you believe in God for something and it's not there. Just stand and have faith and, having done all this, stand, stand man of God, stand woman of God. If that's what God led you to, god will take care of it in his time, because he's not subject to your time, but while you're waiting, he's building you. Beloved, listen, we all want to have more than enough, especially for those who may be going through lean times. We all want to have more than enough, especially for those who may be going through lean times. We all want to have enough resources to take care of our needs. But let's be let's, let's, let's.

Speaker 2:

This is my final point. Make sure you know the difference between your needs and your wants, because sometimes you think it's a need when really it's a want. For example, maybe you need a car and that's fine, but God will never provide that need above what resources he provides to you. What does that mean? So let's say you need a car and God has provided you a job or an occupation where you get paid $60,000 a year, $100,000 a year, $200,000 a year Okay. So in that you have bills you have to pay, and I'm saying this because it applies whether you are $200,000 a year, $50,000, whatever it is.

Speaker 2:

You can be poor in all areas. You can be a millionaire and be broke, because your debts are just as high as your intake. Your intake and outtake if they're close together, you're poor. But my point is let's say you have a job that pays you $60,000 a year and your bills all together after you pay the bills, minus any car note, you have about a thousand dollars in disposable income every every month or every two weeks, let's say every two weeks. So let's say you have a thousand dollars of disposable income, or di, after you pay your bills and you now are looking for a car. So, when looking for your car note, maybe it's not a good idea to get a car note that's eight hundred dollars, because now you're looking and it may be something you really want, but now you're left with $200 disposable income. I mean, god did give you a brain, right. Maybe you need to get a car note or a car.

Speaker 2:

That number one is dependable, reliable, good, and you don't have to worry about paying you know, monthly repair bills because the car is reliable. So you do your research and even though there may be a car, let's say you have two choices, both cars you like. One is going to be $400. The other one's going to be $200. And either one. If you have the $200 car, you're going to have $800 in disposable income as opposed to $1,000. Okay, if you do the $400 car, you're going to have $800 disposable income as opposed to $1,000. Okay, if you do a $400 car, you're going to have $600 disposable income. Okay, both are good situations. However, the $200 car may be in your best interest because you still have seed to give, unless and this is wisdom, unless that $200 car has a history of being needs for repairs or recalls. Now you got to think about, you got to factor in I might have to take this to the repair shop versus the $400 car, which is more reliable less repair, you just have to do your regular maintenance and servicing but it's more reliable. It may be worth getting the $400 car because you don't have to worry about the repair bills. It may be worth getting a $400 car because you don't have to worry about the repair bills. But either or.

Speaker 2:

The point is, don't get into your wants. That could cause, that, could drive up situations out of wisdom that you know you're not ready for. In other words, use wisdom beloved, use wisdom, use wisdom. Don't be greedy. You may want that $800 a month car, but you don't need it. You don't need to have an $800 car. You can get one that's reasonably priced for $300, $400, even $200. Provided you don't have to have, like I said, a lengthy repair bill.

Speaker 2:

Let me give you an example. I'll give you a good example. Wife had a Nissan, daughter too. They loved it. Nissan was great, but those Nissans they bought had a history of transmission problems, other things, etc. And eventually those things came up so they had to factor in the repair bill. Even though the bill was cheaper for the monthly payment they had to factor in every month I'd probably have to take it in for repair for transmission or for the brake switch or something else like that. So eventually they realized this is not worth the investment.

Speaker 2:

Even though they were both at the end of their car note literally had a month left of their car note it made more sense for them to get rid of that car because even if the note be paid off, they'd have to be taking it to pet boys or some other repair shop nissan repair shop. So they got rid of the car, traded it in and got a more reliable honda um car, uh, crv I think, or honda suv, because it had a better track record and it had a better appreciation value. Yes, they're paying on a car note, even though they could have been out of a car note. But they looked at well, every month I'm paying X amount of dollars to get this car repaired versus getting a car that I don't have to take to the shop to get repaired. Yes, I'll have a note, but I'll be out this note in four years. See, that's the wisdom, and their DI still actually is better than it was before because the cost of repair made their disposable income go lower, versus paying a car note for a car that all they have to do is take care of, service and maintenance and wear and tear.

Speaker 2:

I'm saying a lot about finances, but my point is, when you have abundance, ask god for wisdom and what makes sense with how you sow, how you take care of your needs, and understand and distinguish between your needs and your wants. Because if you get into a want, making it a need, you could get yourself into a situation where now you have no money to sow. You have no money to sow because you were I hate to say it like this you were looking at consuming it upon your own flesh or your own carnality, because you wanted to floss. You wanted a new car that nobody else has. You wanted a new house. Now you got a 30-year or some people got a 50-year mortgage and they ain't got a steady job, but they got a job that is here today, gone tomorrow. What sense does that make?

Speaker 2:

So, beloved, listen, in all things, in all things, we trust God. In all things we believe God to do exceedingly and abundantly. Above all, we could ask or think, but the biggest thing is this, and again, let's go back to talk about what's important here, and these are some takeaways. Number one you have to make sure that when you are in a season of abundance, you understand the difference between abundance in God's eyes and what's abundance in your eyes. Abundance is not about your wants, it's about your needs. Take care of your needs first and then the needs of others. So when God gives you the resources, take care of your bills, but also help people by giving generously, especially to the poor.

Speaker 2:

Number two don't mistake El Shaddai as being the God of greed. God is the God of more than enough to take care of your needs so that your self-sufficiency is in him, but not in what you want and what you need, what you think you need. God is not about giving you above your needs. God gives you to fill your needs and the needs of others, but not so that you can be greedy and get into overexceeding or lasciviousness, being greedy and wanting things that you don't really need, because giving beloved, when you give to others, it produces a seed, it produces a harvest of giving. So sow with wisdom, sow in abundance, based on understanding that whatever you're sowing is not yours anyway, it's God's. You are just a steward and if you don't know what to do, if any of you lack wisdom, ask God, who gives what. According to James, he gives liberally. He doesn't hold back wisdom. Because you want to make sure you show your father, abba God, that he can trust you with the resources.

Speaker 2:

I pray this word was a blessing to you, and I know I got a little bit into the weeds when it comes to finances, but I do this on a daily basis and so I'm sorry, but I pray it was a blessing to you. For now we're going to offer the call of salvation and I'm going to offer you two scriptures. The first one is Romans 10.9, because if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. The other one, ephesians 2.8.9, for by grace, you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing so. Now I'm going to ask you to pray this with me in faith, and I want you to believe that everything you pray is true and God will answer. So pray this after me, lord. I admit I am a sinner. I need and want your forgiveness. I accept your death as the penalty for my sin. I've recognized that your mercy and grace is a gift you offer to me because of your great love, not based on anything I have done. Cleanse me and make me your child. By faith, I receive you into my heart. By faith, I receive you into my heart as the Son of God and as Savior and Lord of my life. From now on, help me live for you, with you in control, in Jesus' precious name, amen.
